Sharks and Rays

Sharks have been swimming in the seas for over 300 million years, and have hardly altered in all that time. They are the top predators in most food chains and for many the only threat is from other sharks or man.
Rays are basically flat sharks, and are adapted to life lying flat on the sea bed. They have reversed their gills and breath in through the top openings, called spiracles, and out of the lower ones, situated on the under side, near the mouth. This stops sand from being sucked into their gill slits.
Enjoy learning more about these fascinating creatures in our specially themed exhibits. Get up close with graceful thornback rays and walk underwater with tropical black tip reef sharks.
